Moving Questions?Start Here.
Straight answers about local moving, long-distance moves, packing, storage, pricing, building rules, and moving day.
Most people do not move all the time. These questions are normal. Use this page to understand what matters before you book, pack, store, or move.
Good answers make moving easier.
A move gets easier when the important details are clear early.
Price, timing, packing, stairs, elevator access, parking, storage, and long-distance delivery all matter. You do not need to know everything before calling. But the more details we have, the better we can help.
This page is written in plain English, so you can quickly understand what to ask, what to prepare, and what can change the plan.
The move is not just the truck.
The truck matters. But so does the elevator, the parking, the packing, the closing date, the storage plan, the fragile items, and the person answering the phone when something changes.
Moving Quotes & Pricing
How do I get a moving quote?
Send the pickup address, delivery address, move date, home size, inventory, stairs or elevator details, parking situation, and any packing or storage needs. The better the details, the better the quote.
Why do moving prices change?
Moving prices can change when the inventory changes, access is different than expected, packing is not ready, stairs or long carries are involved, or the move takes more time than planned.
What information do you need before giving a price?
We need the addresses, move date, home or building type, list of items, box count, large or fragile pieces, stairs, elevator, parking, and whether you need packing, storage, or long-distance delivery.
Can you give a flat price?
Sometimes yes. A flat price works best when the inventory, access, date, and move details are clear. If the details are not clear yet, we may need more information first.
Is the cheapest moving quote always the best option?
Not usually. A very low quote can miss important details like stairs, packing, large items, long carries, building rules, or enough time for the crew to do the job right.
What can make my move take longer?
Packing not being finished, elevator delays, parking problems, long walks, heavy furniture, fragile items, building rules, traffic, or a bigger inventory than expected can all add time.
Local Moving
Do you handle local moves in Westchester?
Yes. Atlantic Star helps with local moves across Westchester, including homes, apartments, condos, co-ops, offices, packing, and storage-related moves.
How far in advance should I book a local move?
As early as you can. If you have a weekend, end-of-month date, elevator reservation, or building rules, it is better to reach out early.
Can you move apartments and condos?
Yes. We help with apartments, condos, co-ops, elevator buildings, walk-ups, and buildings with move rules.
Can you move houses?
Yes. We help with small homes, larger homes, townhomes, downsizing, family moves, and moves with packing or storage needs.
What should I do before a local move?
Finish packing, label boxes, clear walkways, reserve the elevator if needed, confirm parking, and keep important items like keys, documents, medicine, and chargers with you.
Do you move within the same building?
Yes. We can help with moves inside the same building, between apartments, between floors, or from an apartment to storage or another unit.
Long-Distance Moving
Do you handle long-distance moves?
Yes. We help with moves leaving New York and moves coming back into the area. Long-distance moves need clear inventory, pickup details, delivery details, and timing expectations.
What makes long-distance moving different from local moving?
Long-distance moving has more timing, inventory, delivery, and access details. Pickup and delivery may happen on different days, and the delivery address needs to be checked carefully.
What should I know before a long-distance move?
Know what is going, what is not going, pickup access, delivery access, timing, whether storage may be needed, and whether the truck can safely reach both locations.
Can delivery access affect a long-distance move?
Yes. Tight streets, low trees, narrow roads, building rules, or no truck access can affect delivery. If a large truck cannot get close, a shuttle may be needed.
Do I need an exact inventory for a long-distance quote?
The inventory should be as accurate as possible. Long-distance pricing depends heavily on what is actually being moved.
Can I store items before or after a long-distance move?
Yes. Storage can help if pickup and delivery dates do not line up, the new home is not ready, or you need time before final delivery.
Packing Services
Can you help with packing?
Yes. We can help with full packing, partial packing, fragile items, kitchens, artwork, closets, and last-minute boxes.
Can I pack myself?
Yes. If you pack yourself, boxes should be closed, labeled, and ready before the crew arrives. Open boxes and loose items can slow the move down.
What should I not pack myself?
Consider getting help with fragile dishes, glass, artwork, lamps, mirrors, delicate furniture, and anything you would be upset to see damaged.
How should I label boxes?
Label boxes by room and contents. If something is fragile or needed right away, mark that clearly on more than one side of the box.
Should heavy items go in big boxes?
No. Heavy items like books should go in smaller boxes. Big boxes are better for lighter items like bedding, pillows, or soft goods.
Can packing be added to my moving quote?
Yes. Tell us which rooms or items need packing so we can plan the time, materials, and crew correctly.
Storage
Do you offer storage?
Yes. Storage can help when closing dates change, renovations take longer, delivery timing is not ready, or you need time while downsizing.
When does storage make sense?
Storage usually makes sense when your new place is not ready, you are between homes, you are renovating, you are downsizing, or a long-distance delivery window does not line up.
Can storage be part of my move?
Yes. Storage works best when it is connected to the move plan: pickup, packing, storage timing, and final delivery should all make sense together.
How should items be prepared for storage?
Items should be packed, wrapped, labeled, and protected properly. Fragile pieces, furniture, artwork, and boxes that may sit for a while need extra attention.
What should not go into storage?
Do not store food, liquids that can leak, hazardous items, anything illegal, important documents you may need, medicine, or items you need right away.
Can storage help with downsizing?
Yes. Storage gives you time to decide what fits, what should be donated, and what should stay with you.
Building Preparation
Do I need to reserve an elevator?
If your building has a service or freight elevator, probably yes. Ask your building manager, front desk, doorman, superintendent, or management office.
What building rules should I ask about?
Ask about move hours, elevator reservation, loading dock, parking, insurance paperwork, floor protection, wall protection, and who the crew should call when they arrive.
What if my building requires paperwork?
Ask the building for the exact paperwork requirements and send them early. Waiting until the last minute can delay the move.
Where should the moving truck park?
Ask the building or town where the truck can safely and legally load. A close loading spot can save time. A bad parking situation can slow the whole move.
Do house moves need building preparation?
House moves do not usually have building rules, but access still matters: driveway, street parking, stairs, tight doors, long walks, and fragile floors should be discussed.
What should I keep ready on moving day?
Keep keys, fobs, elevator access, parking instructions, building contact information, documents, medicine, chargers, and first-night items with you.
Move Day
Do I need to be home during the move?
It is best if you or someone you trust is there at pickup and delivery. The crew may need decisions about items, rooms, access, or placement.
What should I do when the crew arrives?
Walk the crew through the home, point out fragile items, explain what stays, confirm the destination, and mention any building or parking details.
Should boxes be closed before movers arrive?
Yes. Boxes should be closed and ready unless you booked packing help. Open boxes, loose items, and unfinished packing can slow down the move.
Can movers take loose items?
Small loose items should usually be packed into boxes. Loose items are easier to lose, harder to protect, and slower to carry.
What should I move myself?
Move important documents, cash, jewelry, medicine, passports, chargers, keys, personal items, and anything you cannot replace.
Can weather affect moving day?
Yes. Rain, snow, heat, and ice can affect timing and protection. The move can still happen, but floors, walkways, and access may need extra care.
Furniture, Fragile Items & Special Pieces
Do you protect furniture?
Yes. Furniture protection is an important part of the move. Tell us about delicate, expensive, oversized, or hard-to-move pieces early.
Can you disassemble and reassemble furniture?
For many standard items, yes. Let us know ahead of time what may need to be taken apart so the crew can plan for it.
How should I prepare fragile items?
Tell us what is fragile before the move. Dishes, glass, artwork, mirrors, lamps, and delicate pieces should be packed and marked clearly.
Can you move heavy items?
We can help with many heavy items, but we need details first: size, weight, stairs, access, and whether special equipment or extra movers may be needed.
What if furniture does not fit through the door?
Sometimes furniture needs to be disassembled, angled carefully, or moved through another access point. Tell us if it was difficult to get the piece inside originally.
Do you move artwork and mirrors?
Yes, but they need proper packing and protection. Send photos or details if the piece is large, fragile, or valuable.
Office Moving
Do you handle office moves?
Yes. We help with office moves, desks, chairs, files, equipment, packing, storage, and moves that need to happen with less disruption to the workday.
How should an office prepare for moving day?
Label desks, files, equipment, and rooms clearly. Back up important data, remove personal items, and decide what needs to be moved first.
Can office furniture be disassembled?
Many office desks, tables, and systems may need disassembly. Send details or photos so the crew can plan correctly.
Can you move office items into storage?
Yes. Storage can help if the new office is not ready, renovations are still happening, or extra furniture and files need temporary space.
Can you move after business hours?
Scheduling depends on availability, building rules, and the size of the move. Ask early if your office needs a specific time window.
